Tongue & Groove Paneling
In a typical traditional sauna, the walls are made of tongue and groove wood paneling. Each of our tongue & groove boards starts out as a 1" x 5" or 1" x 4" board that's milled to perfection. Our paneling is kiln dried to 6-8% moisture which stabalizes the woods and reducing warping and shrinking of the boards once their properly installed in a sauna. Tongue & Groove paneling can be installed either horizontally or vertically. We offer several types of paneling with differing looks and various benefits.

Red Cedar woods provide a more comfortable and cooler sauna surface to sit and lean on, compared to more dense sauna woods. Cedar sauna wood naturally repels many bacteria, fungi and insects. All Cedar sauna woods have an aromatic scent, but the heartwood of Red Cedar trees has the strongest aroma and is popular in many American traditional saunas. Available in 1/2" and 11/16" thick.

Tongue & Groove wood paneling can be installed horizontally or vertically. Vertical is most common because there is usually little waste for a 7 foot ceiling height. We have several common lengths of sauna paneling in stock: 6', 7', 8', 9', and 10' lengths. The usual size of T&G sauna paneling is ¾" thick x 4" wide in 7 or 8 foot lengths. Some wood types may be available in 1x6" sizes. In most vertical applications you will need to fasten 2x2" nailers to the studs for proper backing to secure paneling to. Be sure to add supports behind the paneling where benches and a sauna heater will be installed. For a diagram of vertical installation with more detail, check our our Vertical Paneling Install page.
Another option for an attractive pattern if you prefer end matching. Simply cut ends at a 45 degree angle. This is a great and economical way to minimize waste.
- Regular nails will rust, corrode, and streak your sauna interior. Use stainless steel finishing nails to install sauna paneling. Our stainless steel nails will not streak and stain your sauna wood.
- We highly recommend using an pneumatic nail gun to install the sauna paneling. Using a nail gun saves time and provides way more accuracy than nailing by hand.
- Never hose down your sauna. Maintain your sauna wood by using Sauna Clean
- Parafin Sauna Wood Oil will keep your sauna benches and walls protected and not allow excess moisture to soak into the wood fibers
